Remote trail to three waterfalls off Lower Smith River Road.
This remote trail visits three breathtaking waterfalls. An initial descent rewards hikers with a view of the 90-foot Upper Kentucky Falls; the trail then drops down moderate switchbacks to the 100-foot Lower Kentucky Falls and North Fork Smith Falls — twin waterfalls that can be viewed at the same time from certain vantage points. A semi-maintained trail continues 5 miles beyond Lower Kentucky Falls; check conditions before hiking it. Located 0.5 miles north of Reedsport on US 101, then east 11 miles on Lower Smith River Road to North Fork Road #48, north 7.6 miles, east on Road #23 for 10.5 miles, and finally 2.8 miles on Road #919 to the trailhead. Distance: 0.8 miles to Upper Falls, plus 1.4 miles to Lower Falls (one way). Difficulty: Moderate. No fee or permits; no facilities at trailhead.
